Driver Education & Safety

  • SCC offers Driver Education classes at physical locations in Lincoln, Beatrice and Crete. The lecture also is available online.

Driver Education consists of two components: Lecture and Drive Lab

20 hours of lecture either in the classroom or online
6 hours of behind-the-wheel training when lecture is not in session

SCC Driver’s Education classes are certified by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for the Provisional Operator's Permit (POP's) and will waive the written and drive exam for 16 - 17 year olds. Note: a waiver is not available for drivers age 18 and older.

Highly encouraged that the student has had some behind-the-wheel practice with a parent, sponsor or guardian PRIOR to starting the class.

    FAQs

What are the pros and cons of online lecture?
Pro: Online offers students the flexibility to complete the course around their schedule. For those students who need more time, it allows them to work at their own pace. Con: It is not for everyone. If you are not a self-motivated, self-starting student, you will fall behind and risk not passing the course.

Since I am taking the lecture online do I have to attend orientation?
Yes, or a representative. You will get vital information about the Web site, log-in information and schedule your drive time.

How do I sign up for my drive time?
During orientation, students are divided into groups based at physical locations. Students choose a drive time in chronological order based on the date you registered for class.

Since I am taking the lecture online, do I have to buy the book?
Yes, you will need to purchase the book. See the Getting Started (link to the Getting Started section) section for more information. You must read the chapters and complete the chapter quizzes.

Does reading the book count for my log-in time?
No. Just as if you were at a physical location, you must be prepared for class and do the assigned reading prior to lecture.

When do I have to be logged on?
During the school year, you must be logged on four hours each week. This can be any four hours that fit into your schedule. The hours need not be in a row or on the weekends. During the summer, you must be logged on two - four hours each day, again, not necessarily in a row or on the weekend. Log on during hours that fit into your schedule.

How many hours per day/week are required for the online lecture?

    • Sections beginning Jan. 10, Feb. 20, April 10, Sept. 12, and Oct. 23, 2023: You are required to be online 4 hours per week for five consecutive weeks.
    • Sections beginning March 13, June 5, July 11, and July 31, 2023: You are required to be online 20 hours for the one week.
    • Sections beginning June 12 and July 17, 2023: You are required to be online 10 hours per week for two consecutive weeks.

Can I take the class at my own pace or is there a timeline?
You must submit assignments by the deadline listed in the course syllabus provided by the online instructor.

How do I take the tests and turn in my assignments?
Everything is online. Chapter quizzes, practice exams and the final tests are all completed and graded online.

Is the instructor online when I’m online?
Your instructor will have virtual office hours that are published on the course calendar. The instructor is online at various times throughout the course. Additionally, your instructor is available by phone and email.

Where do I do my driving?
Classes are offered at physical locations in Lincoln, Beatrice or Crete. You register for the location you want to drive from, even though you are taking the lecture online. Lincoln classes are offered at all of the public high schools and SCC's Lincoln Campus (8800 O St.). The Beatrice class is offered at SCC's Beatrice Campus (4771 W. Scott Road). Classes offered at Crete meet at the local high school.

  • How do I get registered?
You can register online, by phone, by fax or in person.

Do I have to buy the textbook?
    Yes.

Do I have to attend orientation?
Yes, or a representative may attend in your place.

Does a parent have to attend the orientation?
Yes, if at all possible. If a parent or guardian isn’t available, another adult or older sibling may attend with the new driver.

Do I have to attend all lectures and drives?
Yes. This is a requirement by statute.

How will this class help me?
You will receive a Department of Motor Vehicles waiver and are not required to take any further tests for your license. Many insurance providers offer a discount to those who successfully complete a Driver's Education course.

Is the testing part of the class?
Testing is a part of driver education and is done for both written and skills assessment.

What happens if I fail either part?
You get two chances to pass the driving part of the class. Subsequent drive re-tests cost $40 (effective Jan. 1, 2021) each attempt. Should you fail the written test, you can study and retake it at the Jack J. Huck Continuing Education Center (301 S. 68th St. Place, Lincoln) until you are able to pass the test.

    Is tuition assistance available?
Please see the CE Scholarship for more information.

How do I sign up for my drive time?
During orientation, students are divided into groups based at physical locations. Students choose a drive time in chronological order based on the date you registered for class.

    When is the driving finished?
During the school year, the 2 hour drive lab will meet once per week for six consecutive weeks. During the summer, the two-hour lab will meet every day for one week only Monday through Saturday. The driving and lecture are always taught concurrently.

How old do I have to be to obtain a Learner Permit?
    Minimum age 15.

Can I drive without a learner permit?
    No.

    Does SCC provide the cars?
